The study and practice of automotive safety involves designing, building, equipping and regulating vehicles to make sure accidents don’t happen. Designing roads for safety is part of road traffic safety.

An academic study conducted by Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory of Buffalo, New York was among the first to address motor vehicle safety in a formal academic setting. They conclude in their extensive report that seat belts, as well as padded dashboards, are essential safety features. Although automobiles are the most common source of traffic deaths and injuries, pedestrians represent the predominant victim due to the disproportionate mass and velocity of automobiles compared to pedestrians.

It is estimated that 80% of vehicles sold around the world do not meet the main safety standards outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The seven most important car safety rules have only been adopted by 40 countries.

Almost every car on the road today is equipped with a safety feature that is intended to make driving more secure. There may be some of these that you already know, and there may even be some that you are unaware of! Keep checking back as new features and functions are being added to cars all the time.
